Strong Words: an Excerpt from McCain's Speech

If you find faults with our country, make it a better one. If you’re disappointed with the mistakes of government, join its ranks and work to correct them. Enlist in our Armed Forces. Become a teacher. Enter the ministry. Run for public office. Feed a hungry child. Teach an illiterate adult to read. Comfort the afflicted. Defend the rights of the oppressed. Our country will be the better, and you will be the happier. Because nothing brings greater happiness in life than to serve a cause greater than yourself.

I’m going to fight for my cause every day as your President. I’m going to fight to make sure every American has every reason to thank God, as I thank Him: that I’m an American, a proud citizen of the greatest country on earth, and with hard work, strong faith and a little courage, great things are always within our reach. Fight with me. Fight with me.

Fight for what’s right for our country.

Fight for the ideals and character of a free people.

Fight for our children’s future.

Fight for justice and opportunity for all.

Stand up to defend our country from its enemies.

Stand up for each other; for beautiful, blessed, bountiful America.

Stand up, stand up, stand up and fight. Nothing is inevitable here. We’re Americans, and we never give up. We never quit. We never hide from history. We make history.
Amen.

Words to live by.

Too bad the base doesn't seem to get it. They'd rather heckle and get nasty.

*sighs*

Does McCain get it?

Clearly not. He believes it, of course.

But he is willing to ignore his own call to action. He is willing to stand on a platform with --- hell, run for election with people who mock "community organizing" in public.

It makes me feel sorry for the man. I turned off the TV with an honest sense of pity for a fellow who now seems to me to be well-intentioned, but weak-spirited and very confused.

He would have made a fine conservative Democrat, one suspiscious of expanding entitlements and a bit overenthusiastic about "liberal interventionism"; a law-and-order streak leavened by an expansive definition of the national community.

The speech made me realize that as a Democrat, he'd be a sitting Veep running for re-election ... and one who didn't have to prostitute himself.

Sadly, for him, he was too weak to make the switch in 2002 or 2004.

Not sadly for the country, though, for there are people of greater character who are strong enough to care about the issues.

Now it's too late. Even if McCain wins, he will have no mandate ... and the rest of his party will take the victory as a popular imprimatur of their agenda.

That would be terrible. For McCain and for us.

I almost hope that McCain doesn't get his own words, because it is just too pathetically sad if he does.

"Fight for our children’s future."

Sarah Palin wants creationism to be taught as science. Sarah Palin tried to censor library books when she was a mayor.

That's how McCain has chosen to fight for our children's future. Will, remember that every time you write about natural history or engineering or education, McCain has already chosen to fight on the other side.
