536 AD was not a good year

"during this year a most dread portent took place. For the sun gave forth its light without brightness… and it seemed exceedingly like the sun in eclipse, for the beams it shed were not clear."

- Procopius of Caesarea

Real Climate wrote up a good post on how there appears to have been an equatorial volcanic eruption circa 536 AD as the source of the climate issues of 535 - 536 AD. Go take a look.
